Or if he doesn’t see his shadow, he will stay outside and enjoy the warm weather and the upcoming spring as it approaches. The students will be creating their own graphs and making predictions.
Chick-fil-a Night is on Wednesday, February 3 from 5 – 8 pm. It is located near the North Point Mall. It is a great fundraiser with lots of yummy food and fun! The class with the largest participation wins a chicken nugget party! Hope to see you there!

Math Intro to Multiplication Activity:
On Thursday, February 11, during math time @ 10:30-11:30am, homeroom students will estimate, count, sort, and graph M&M’s. They will practice measurement and create groupings for multiplication. The second graders will frost cookies and enjoy them.
President’s Day-Students will enjoy a days off of school on Friday, February 12 and Monday, February 15.
Math Test 3.1 & 3.2: Math study guide will be distributed on Tuesday, February 2. We will be reviewing the study guide during the week. The unit assessment is scheduled for Tuesday, February 9th and Wednesday, February 10th.
3.1 Math
Students will be reviewing all the concepts that they have learned. One of the areas is creating bar graphs and picture graphs by surveying students and generating data to present graphs. They will practice interpreting data from the graphs.
MCC3.MD.3 - Draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a data set with several categories. Solve one- and two-step “how many more” and “how many less” problems using information presented in scaled bar graphs.
MCC3.MD.4 - Generate measurement data by measuring lengths using rulers marked with halves and fourths of an inch. Show the data by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in appropriate units-whole numbers, halves, or quarters
Math 3.2
Our class will be practicing their skills with quadrilaterals, polygons and their attributes. They will measuring the perimeter and length x width. Students will partition shapes into parts or fractions. They will complete a pizza activity that demonstrates fractions as a whole. A quiz will be conducted on Friday.
MCC3.G.1 - Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.
MCC3.G.2 - Partition shapes into parts with equal areas. Express the area of each part as a unit fraction of the whole.
MCC3.G.1 Example:
Sue and Mary could not agree on their descriptions of squares and rectangles Sue stated that all squares are rectangles, but, Mary believes that all rectangles are squares. Which student is correct, and why?
Answer: Sue is correct because all squares have two sets of parallel sides, opposite sides of equal length, and four right angles, just like rectangles.
Writing
Next week we will continue opinion writing. Our lessons will focus on leads and closings. The students will learn how to write and introduction for their opinion writing and how to end their opinion writings.
Next week we will also take a Write Score assessment on opinion writing. This is not a graded assessment, more of a way to gather information on how the students are doing in their writing progression.
The students will participate in an author’s celebration with the first graders-TBA.
In grammar we will continue to work on verb tense.
W.2.1 - Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply reasons that support the opinion, use linking words (e.g., because, and, also) to connect opinion and reasons, and provide a concluding statement or section.
L.2.1.d - Conventions of Standard English: Form and use the past tense of frequently occurring irregular verbs (e.g., sat, hid, told).
Health
Students will learn what decisions that are made today can continue throughout their lives and keep them healthy tomorrow. The second graders will create a chart that displays all of the trusted adults and professionals that can help you stay healthy (ex. Doctor, Nurse, Dentist, etc.)
Each student will investigate a common childhood chronic disease, and come up with strategies to support students that might have those diseases (e.g., drawings, collages, writing, etc.). Some diseases they will be researching about are asthma, allergies, diabetes, and epilepsy.
that will help us stay healthy. We will be learning and writing about some childhood diseases.
HE2.1 - Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health.
HE2.4: Students will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks
HE2.7 - Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce health risks
Reading
Next week in reading we will continue to compare and contrast two texts on the same topic.
Standards:
RI.2.3 - Describe the connection between a series of historical events, scientific ideas or concepts, or steps in technical procedures in a text.
RI.2.8 - Describe how reasons support specific points the author makes in a text.
RI.2.9 - Compare and contrast the most important points presented by two texts on the same topic.
