Every day, the second graders have witnessed numerous changes with the caterpillars. The life cycle of a butterfly starts with a butterfly laying its eggs. Next, a tiny larva, or caterpillar, hatches from the egg. The larva, or caterpillar grows quickly and will molt and gets rid of its skin. Then, the larva becomes a pupa. It makes a hard covering. Last, a butterfly comes out of the covering. A butterfly blossoms! The life cycle starts again.
As the butterfly matures, it will be time to set it free to the wildlife. Students will enjoy a “Celebration of Life” with bubble wands and ice pops. The second graders will watch their butterflies fly up and away!
The students were so amazed with the growth of their bean plants and window plants each day. The bean plants were planted in soil while the window plants were planted in cotton and water in a Ziploc bag. The smiles on their faces verified their joy with the success of their “green thumb” approach.
The life cycle study guide will be distributed on Monday, May 2.
