Happy 100 Days! We will be celebrating our 100 days on Monday in style! Lots of smiles and fun learning by using 100!
IXl and MobyMax – please continue to allow students to practice the math skills with these wonderful tools. Please email me if you need user names and passwords. Thank you for your support!
It is very chilly in the mornings when we out for recess at 11:00am. If it is 40 degrees or warmer without precipitation, our class will play outdoors. The students need a coat, hat and gloves to stay warm. The flu season is upon us and our current health unit that we are studying is “Staying Healthy.” Thank you for your support!
3.1 Math
Our class has been working on regrouping of addition and subtraction of three digit numbers. They are rechecking their work by using the opposite operations.
We will interpret and create line plots this week. Measuring items to the quarter inch will be our next skill to practice.
The math study guide for this unit will be distributed on Monday, February 1. The test is scheduled for Tuesday, February 9 and Wednesday, February 10.
The following standards for this week:
MCC3.NBT - Number and Operations in Base Ten
MCC3.NBT.1 - Use place value understanding to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100.
MCC3.NBT.2 - Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
MCC.3.NBT.2 (DOK 2)
Sara sold $800 worth of products on the internet during the first three months of the year. She sold
$150 worth of products in January and $200 more in February than in January.
How much did she sell in March?
A. $100
B. $350
C. $450
D. $600
The answer is C. $450
Setup each month
January February March
$150 $200 $450
150
$350
Add: $150 + $350 = $500
Subtract: $900 - $500 = $450
3.2 Math
This week, our class will practice area and perimeter in real life experiences. They will use multiplication and division to help them solve the problems.
The math study guide for this unit will be distributed on Monday, February 1. The test is scheduled for Tuesday, February 9 and Wednesday, February 10.
MCC3.MD.6 - Measure areas by counting unit squares (square cm, square m, square in, square ft, and improvised units).
MCC3.MD.7 - Relate area to the operations of multiplication and addition.
MCC3.MD.7.a - Find the area of a rectangle with whole-number side lengths by tiling it, and show that the area is the same as would be found by multiplying the side lengths.
MCC3.MD.7.b - Multiply side lengths to find areas of rectangles with whole-number side lengths in the context of solving real world and mathematical problems, and represent whole-number products as rectangular areas in mathematical reasoning.
MCC3.MD.7.c - Use tiling to show in a concrete case that the area of a rectangle with whole-number side lengths a and b + c is the sum of a × b and a × c. Use area models to represent the distributive property in mathematical reasoning.
MCC3.MD.7.d - Recognize area as additive. Find areas of rectilinear figures by decomposing them into non-overlapping rectangles and adding the areas of the non-overlapping parts, applying this technique to solve real world problems.
Social Studies:
Students will read and write facts about MLK in their social studies journals. A jeopardy review of MLK will be given to the students on Tuesday. A homework sheet was distributed last week on MLK, have the students reread the article and review the information. It is a great summary that gives the contributions and achievements of MLK. Quiz on Tuesday.
SSH1 The student will read about and describe the lives of historical figures Jackie Robinson and Martin Luther King, Jr. in Georgia history.
a. Identify the contributions made by Jackie Robinson and Martin Luther King, Jr. to improving civil rights.
b. Describe how everyday life of Jackie Robinson and Martin Luther King, Jr. was similar to and different from everyday life in the present (food, clothing, homes, transportation, communication, recreation, rights and freedoms).
Health:
Students will learn what decisions that are made today can continue throughout their lives and keep them healthy tomorrow. The second graders will research about trusted adults like nurses, doctors, etc. They will discuss how healthy teeth is important.
HE2.1 - Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health.
HE2.3 - Students will demonstrate the ability to access valid information
Writing:
Our class visited a first grade class and joined in their writing celebration. The second graders paired up with a first grader and read their informational writings. We wrote positive attributes of the first graders writings.
We will continue to create opinion writings.
Standard: W.2.1 - Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply reasons that support the opinion, use linking words (e.g., because, and, also) to connect opinion and reasons, and provide a concluding statement or section.
Reading
Explain to children that in the upcoming bend, they'll all have opportunities to read text sets of books on different topics. Also, give out "new book sets" to each group of partners as they trade out their old nonfiction text.
Standards: RI.2.4 - Determine the meaning of words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 2 topic or subject area.
RI.2.5 - Know and use various text features (e.g., captions, bold print, subheadings, glossaries, indexes, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently.
RI.2.7 - Explain how specific images (e.g., a diagram showing how a machine works) contribute to and clarify a text.
