Monday is a national holiday celebrating the life of Martin Luther King Jr. School will be back in session on Tuesday.
Thursday papers are back! You will receive paper flyers/notices/handouts home on Thursdays in your child’s yellow folder.
3.1 Math
This week, we practiced numerous strategies to master solving multiple step word problems. Continue to practice regrouping of three digit numbers.
The following standards for this week:
MCC3.NBT - Number and Operations in Base Ten
MCC3.NBT.1 - Use place value understanding to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100.
MCC3.NBT.2 - Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
Associative property - the way the addends are grouped does not change the sum
example: 3 + (2+4) = (3+2) + 4
Commutative property - the order of the addends does not change the sum
example: 3 + 2 = 2 + 3
Identity property-the sum of any number and zero equals the number
example: 3 + 0 = 3
Students will practice their rounding, place value and strategies needed to add and subtract numbers. Regrouping will be reviewed and practiced.
A math quiz will be given on Thursday, January 21.
3.2 Math
MCC3.MD.7.b - Multiply side lengths to find areas of rectangles with whole-number side lengths in the context of solving real world and mathematical problems, and represent whole-number products as rectangular areas in mathematical reasoning.
Example: A family is given 75 square feet of carpet. They must decide which room in their home to re-carpet.
Which room measurements shown can completely re-carpet with the 75 square feet of carpet provided?
MCC3.MD.8 - Solve real world and mathematical problems involving perimeters of polygons, including finding the perimeter given the side lengths, finding an unknown side length, and exhibiting rectangles with the same perimeter and different areas or with the same area and different perimeters.
Example: Bert is finding the area of two rectangles. The two rectangles have the same area but different perimeters. The measurement of the first rectangle is 6 ft. by 4 ft.
What could be the measurements of the other rectangle?
6ft. by 4 ft. = 24 sq. ft.
2ft. by 12 ft. = 24 sq. ft.
A math quiz will be given on Thursday, January 21.
Social Studies
In social studies, the students were busy reading and finding facts about MLK. This week, they will create paper bag puppets of MLK and Jackie Robinson. The research of facts will begin with reading books about MLK and Jackie Robinson. They will write the information into graphic organizers.
Standards: SS2H1 - The student will read about and describe the lives of historical figures in Georgia history.
SS2CG3 - The student will give examples of how the historical figures under study demonstrate the positive citizenship traits of honesty, dependability, liberty, trustworthiness, honor, civility, good sportsmanship, patience, and compassion.
Writing
This week, students continued to work on their opinion letters. We learned how to use examples from the text to support our opinions and reasons. Toward the end of the week we began to work on expanding these simple letters into multiple page letters that include many opinions. We will continue to practice this skill next week. We will also review capital letters, and work to revise a letter for publishing. This publish letter will be counted as a quiz grade for opinion writing.
We will also get a chance next week to go visit a first grade class for their author’s celebration. I think this will be a great chance for the students to share their writing expertise with another grade!
Standard: W.2.1 - Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply reasons that support the opinion, use linking words (e.g., because, and, also) to connect opinion and reasons, and provide a concluding statement or section.
Grammar
Next week we will continue to work on possessive nouns. Students are expected to know what possessive nouns are and how to write them correctly in sentences.
Standard: L.2.2.c - Conventions of Standard English: Use an apostrophe to form contractions and frequently occurring possessives.
Reading
Next week we will incorporate vocabulary study by learning to use text features, as well as context clues to figure out the meaning of keywords in our books. Understanding the keywords and important vocabulary found in nonfiction books we help students learn more each time the reread one of their nonfiction books.
Next Thursday students will take a STAR test in the computer lab. We took a STAR test back in September, and results were shared during conferences in October. This STAR test will show the growth that each student has made over the first half of the year, as well as help me plan for the needs of each students for the second half of the year. Once the second graders have taken both the STAR reading and STAR math test, the results will be sent home with the students.
Standards: RI.2.4 - Determine the meaning of words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 2 topic or subject area.
RI.2.5 - Know and use various text features (e.g., captions, bold print, subheadings, glossaries, indexes, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently.
RI.2.7 - Explain how specific images (e.g., a diagram showing how a machine works) contribute to and clarify a text.
