Our second week of school began with creating place value robots in math, writing narratives about personal moments, answering reading questions using the “WH” questions-who, when, where, why, what and how and another health unit on “Germ Prevention.”
Math:
2.1 The students practiced place value by creating colorful “Place Value Flipcharts” that revealed their knowledge of the concepts learned last week. Students interacted with each other by exhibiting their familiarity with making tens, doubles plus 1, fact families, and modeling with base ten blocks. Some other fun activities were designing a “Place Value Robot” and building a “Fact Family House.”
Example: Laura is a florist. She wants to put together several bouquets of flowers to sell at her flower shop. Each bouquet will have 10 stems of tulips. If she has 100 stems of tulips, how many bouquets of flowers can she put together?
Answer: 10 bouquets
Some strategies-the students can draw 10 groups of 10 to get 100. They can skip count by 10’s. They can use repeated addition 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 = 100 (10 x 10 = 100)
There will be a math quiz on Friday. It will include skip counting, place value which includes standard form, expanded form, modeling, and word form.
2.2 Math
The students are practicing their regrouping of addition. They are using their prior knowledge and strategies learned to help them succeed. The second graders are getting more familiar with their routines each day!
Example: Tracy is adding the numbers 33, 27, and 25.
Which of the following explains how she can solve the problem correctly?
Example: The table below lists the number of minutes Johnny spent reading.
Day Minutes Read
Thursday 45
Friday 26
Saturday 32
Sunday 59
On which three days did he read a total of 136 minutes?
The answer is Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. 45 + 32 + 59 = 136 minutes
Students will use the strategy of finding 3 numbers in the ones column that add up to 6 or 16. 5 + 2 + 9 = 16
A math quiz will be given to the students on Friday. It will be similar to my blog and homework given this week.
3.1 Math
Rounding: Students will practice their skills with estimation and rounding of whole numbers. They will understand the rounding rules: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 you will round down; 5, 6, 7, 8, 0 you will round up.
For Example: What is 564 rounded to the nearest 100?
Answer: 600
Students can use a number line to help them round. They can use the rounding rule. Second graders examine the digit in the ones and tens column when they are rounding to tens. If they are rounding to the nearest hundred, they must consider both the tens and hundreds column.
Word Problem: Sophia is baking 47 cookies for her class play on Monday. Joseph baked 62 cookies. To the nearest ten, how many cookies did the bake together?
Round 47 = 50 (7 is counting up to 50)
Round 62 = 60 (2 is counting down to 60)
The answer is 110 cookies were baked by both Sophia and Joseph.
Writing: Students will continue to dive into building their creativity in writing. They are practicing skills that will help them lure the reader into special moments. We havc begun the process of writing workshops in our classrooms.
Reading: The second graders are enjoying their reading experiences. They received a “crash course” in learning the rules in the media center this week by the media specialist. The children are excited to peruse the book shelves for that special book!
Health:
Experiments: This past week, our students performed many experiments about germs. One was the “Flour Experiment.” Children placed flour on their fingers and observed how germs can be transmitted by shaking each students’ hands. Another way to show how germs spread was the “Glitter Germs Experiment.” It traced evidence of glitter wherever you go. The children really enjoyed it!
Washing Hands: The second graders practiced good hygiene with washing their hands properly. Some fun elements of learning was the “Washing Hands Song” and a story about “Germs.”
Students created individual germ pictures and group posters on germs.
Responsibility: Math homework will be distributed on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students are responsible for returning their homework on the next morning. They will receive Dojo points.
We look forward to another wonderful week getting to know your children!

Example: Tracy is adding the numbers 33, 27, and 25.
Which of the following explains how she can solve the problem correctly?
- Tracy can first add 33 and 27 and get 60. Then she can subtract 12 from 60 and get a final answer of 48.
- Tracy can add 33 and 27 and get an answer of 60. Then she can subtract 25 and get a final answer of 35.
- Tracy can break up all of the numbers into ones. Then she can add 3+2+2 and get 7. Next she can add 3+7+5 and get 15. Finally, she can add 15+7 and get a final answer of 22.
- Tracy can add 33 and 27 and get 60. Then she can add 25 and get a final answer of 85.
