One more week until spring break but we are still learning! April will be here at the end of the week! Wow!
Math: I am so proud of my math students for performing so well on their math tests! Good study skills and using the strategies learned in class.
Report cards were sent out on Thursday, March 24 for you to review. Please return the report card envelope signed and dated by you. Thank you!
Milestone testing is coming up, even though we don’t take the test we want to support our older classmates as they prepare. Let's show that we know they are ready to 'tackle the test' with an awesome Spirit Week before our much deserved Spring Break!
MONDAY - HAT DAY: Top off your score…wear your favorite hat!
TUESDAY - JERSEY DAY: Tackle that test! Wear your favorite jersey that gets you PUMPED!
WEDNESDAY - SILLY SOCK DAY: Knock the socks off that test!
THURSDAY- HAWAIIAN DAY: Lu-“wow” us with your scores! …. Hawaiian shirts, sunglasses and leis!
FRIDAY - PAJAMA DAY: Rest for the test!
3.2
This week in math, the students will practice telling and writing time to the nearest minute and measure time intervals in minutes. A quiz will be given to the students on Thursday.
MCC3.MD.1 - Tell and write time to the nearest minute and measure time intervals in minutes. Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of time intervals in minutes, e.g., by representing the problem on a number line diagram.
Example:
Second grade goes to lunch every day at the same time. They eat for 30 minutes and then have a 15 minute recess. If it takes them an additional 5 minutes to get back to class, what time (in hours and minutes) do they get to class? Show your work.
Answer: They would add the minutes 30 + 15 + 5 = 50 minutes
Math 3.1
Students will be practicing their skills with area and perimeter. We will be emphasizing “estimation” and rounding concepts also this week.
A math quiz will be given on Thursday.
MCC3.MD.5 - Recognize area as an attribute of plane figures and understand concepts of area measurement.
MCC3.MD.5.a - A square with side length 1 unit, called “a unit square,” is said to have “one square unit” of area, and can be used to measure area
MCC3.MD.5.b - A plane figure which can be covered without gaps or overlaps by n unit squares is said to have an area of n square units.
MCC3.MD.6 - Measure areas by counting unit squares (square cm, square m, square in, square ft, and improvised units).
MCC.3.OA.9 (DOK 2)
Find the rule for this pattern and determine the 8th number in the pattern.
1, 8, 16, 24, 32, ___, ___, ___ ?
Answer: Skip counting by 8’s. The 8th number pattern is 8 x 7 = 56.
MCC3.MD.5 (DOK 2)
The rectangle above has an area of 15 square units. Show how to make a rectangle with the same area but with a width of 5 square feet instead of 3 square feet.
The answer is: Make a rectangle with 5 rows and 3 columns or a rectangle with 3
Social Studies:
Our next unit is “Personal Finance.” Students will use the self-discipline required to make informed and reasoned decisions concerning wise spending and saving choices. The second graders will interact in money managing by playing “store.” The second graders will buy items with play money. They will explore their wants and needs along with opportunity costs.
Students will create a “My Economics Booklet” in class. It will support the understanding of why saving money is important. They will learn about wants and needs; consumer and producers; goods and services in their everyday lives.
SS2E4 - The student will describe the costs and benefits of personal spending and saving choices.
Students will make decisions about personal spending and saving have both costs and benefits.
• The benefit of saving is to purchase items that they want.
• The cost of saving is that saving money to purchase an item takes longer.

Writing
Next week is the last week of our poetry unit. We have learned so much about using our poet’s eye, using poetry language and different types of poems.
We will take all of our learning and begin one more poem on Monday. The students will have Monday and Tuesday to write and revise their poem.
We will enjoy an author’s celebration on Thursday!
In grammar we will learn how to use a thesaurus and also how to pick the best word to use in our sentences.
Reading
Next week we will finish up our study of traditional tales. We will end by comparing fairy tales. Students will look at two different versions of the same fairytale and think about how they are the same and how they are different.
