NPES School Play: What a beautiful display of students singing, dancing and acting out their roles for the school play, “The Big Picture.” It was wonderful to see all my former students using their talents and mastering theatrics! Kudos to all of the parents, students and anyone that participated with the production of the enjoyable play, they entertained us all! Can’t wait to see our rising third graders displaying their talents next year!
Groundhog Day: The Groundhog did not see his shadow this past Tuesday, February 2nd, which means he will stay outside and enjoy the warm weather and the upcoming spring as it approaches. The students created their own graphs and made predictions. I enjoyed observing the students’ reactions when they placed their groundhog masks on their faces. It was priceless!
Chick-fil-a Night was this past Wednesday night. It was a great fundraiser with lots of yummy food and fun like spinning the wheel for lunch with the principal or assistant principal! Nate won the silver nose! He receives free food from Chick-fil-a for a year and tickets to see the upcoming circus performance. I enjoyed seeing all my students at the wonderful event! Thank you for your support!
Chinese New Year: The Year of the Monkey will be celebrated on Monday, February 8. Students will discuss the importance of the year. They will receive some souvenirs for the Chinese New Year event. The second graders will create a “Chinese lantern.” People made lanterns to celebrate their peaceful life.
Mardi Gras: The event will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 9. Students will sample a “Kings Cake” and enjoy their beads, masks, and coins in the colors of gold, purple and green. They will learn about the history of Mardi Gras.
Valentine Exchange: The students will exchange Valentines on Thursday, February 11. They will be busy designing their Valentine mailboxes. Please see last week’s blog or the pink “class list” that identified the students’ names. Address each Valentine card. There are 21 students in the class.
Valentine Math Activity Event: The second graders (they will stay in their homerooms) will practice multiplication skills, graphing, and measurement with M&M’s and conversation heart candies on Thursday. They will frost sugar cookies and enjoyed a wonderful treat after all their hard work in math. Yummy! Thank you in advance for all our volunteers and parent donations of Valentine candy. Our room moms Mrs. Armistead and Mrs. Kakaraddi for coordinating the activity! Signup on to donate: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f054babae29a7fe3-valentine
Author’s Celebration for Writing
We have invited Ms. Thoss’s first grade class to join us on Thursday to show them all the wonderful opinion writings we have been creating, and to share with them what we love about them. Then the children will enjoy some homemade muffins and quench their thirst with lemonade.
President’s Day-Students will enjoy some days off of school on Friday, February 12, and Monday, February 15. See you back on Tuesday, February 16!
Recess: It is very chilly in the early afternoons when we out for recess. If it is 40 degrees or warmer without precipitation, our class will play outdoors. The students need a coat, hat and gloves to stay warm. The flu season is upon us and our current health unit that we are studying is “Staying Healthy.” Thank you for your support!
3.1 & 3.2 Math:
Our math test will begin on Tuesday, February 9 and finish on Wednesday, February 10. This will allow the students to have plenty of time to work on the problems without feeling rushed.
On Monday we will continue to review the skills and strategies the students will need to know to take the test.
Please see previous blogs, study guide and students math notebooks to help prepare your child for the test. There will be no math homework this week, other than to study for the math test.
Writing:
We are coming to the end of our opinion writing unit. We will spend next week fixing up and fancying a book nomination for our author’s celebration.
This week we set goal for the students to focus on during this final push in the unit. They will use these goals to improve their nominations and share their best nomination with Ms. Thoss’s class.
In grammar we will begin a two week study of describing words which are “adjectives.” We will learn what they are and how to use them in our writing.
Reading:
Next week is the end of our informational reading unit. The students will have a chance to apply what they have learned about reading informational books. They will also work on a presentation to present what they learned from reading two books on the same topic over the past few weeks.
On Monday, February 8, we have a media skills lesson planned with Ms. Bercher. If your child would like to return or check out books they will have a chance to do so after the lesson.
As you can tell next week is the end of many of the things we have been working on since coming back to school in January. We will be very busy closing up these unit and getting ready for the new learning we will be doing after the students return from their four day weekend!
Science:
Our class will participate in the “Panther Pete’s” science lab on Tuesday, February 16 at 9:30-10:30am. They will enjoy many hands-on experiments with the help of our parents. The students will be able to identify the three common states of matter as solid, liquid, or gas. They will understand mixtures and will use tools to measure mass and volume. Thank you again parents for volunteering to help with this great educational event!
S2P1. Students will investigate properties of matter and changes that occur in objects. Students will learn that there are three common states of matter are solids, liquids, and gases. Each type and form of matter has its own unique attributes. Through the hands-on activities in this unit, students will observe properties of matter and learn that matter can be changed in a variety of ways. (tearing, dissolving, melting, squeezing, etc.)
In the science lab, students will study the properties of matter.
Energy makes change; it does things for us. It moves cars along the road and boats over the water. It bakes a cake in the oven and keeps ice frozen in the freezer. It plays our favorite songs on the radio and lights our homes. Energy makes our bodies grow and allows our minds to think. Scientists define energy as the ability to do work
Students will participate in various hands-on experiments and learn the different light sources around their environment such as sun, lamps, flashlights, candles, matches, light bulbs, glow sticks, pictures of lightning bugs, etc.
Our class will integrate math and science together by graphing energy data into a pictograph or bar graph.
Health:
Next week also brings an end to our health unit. This last part of our health unit focuses on dental health. We will learn about our teeth, how to keep them healthy and why they are important. There is no test related to this unit although the students will be graded on projects and assignments along the way.

Through the hands-on activities in this unit, students will observe properties of matter and learn that matter can be changed in a variety of ways. (tearing, dissolving, melting, squeezing, etc.)
In the science lab, students will study the properties of matter.
- In Center 1, they will create three different types of mixtures.
- At Center 2, you will learn about a mixture involving a gas, and learn what “buoyancy” means while making raisins dance!
- At Center 3, you will estimate and record weight of matter. You will see the effect of changing shape on weight.
- And at Center 4, you will identify items as a solid, liquid or gas - using senses other than sight!
- What are the 3 common properties of matter? Solid, liquid, & gas. (Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass.)
- What is a solid? A state of matter that always has its own shape.
- What is a liquid? A state of matter that always has the same shapes as its container.
- What is a gas? A state of matter that always has the same shape as the container it fills. You cannot see this matter.
