The Creek and Cherokee Villages Project was a great educational event for the parents who volunteered and the children using their creativity by designing and building the Indian homes. Thank you to our wonderful second grade parents-Mrs. Armistead, Mr. Neville, Mrs. Hartman and Mrs. Wheeler who helped the second graders build their villages. It was a truly successful project due to you!
Thank you all so much for a wonderful first semester with your children. It has been very enjoyable getting to know all of the children this past semester! Second semester will bring new challenges in math, social studies, science and health. I am looking forward to seeing how much they continue to learn and grow in 2016. I hope everyone has a wonderful break and gets a chance to relax and spend time with family. Have a relaxing and safe holiday with friends and relatives!
The second graders will receive a “holiday packet.” It includes math and language art activities. If they complete the packet and bring it back on Wednesday, January 6, they will receive 5 DOJO points. Students can also practice their skills on IXL, MobyMax and Redbird over the holiday break. I will distribute the user id and passwords.
Math: 2.2 & 3.1
Study Guide is due on Monday, December 14. All students will receive a DOJO point for completing it and bringing into class on Monday morning. Please use the homework, quizzes, blogs, and study guide to help support the math studying.
The Math Assessment will be administered to the students on Tuesday, December 15 & Wednesday, December 16.
Holiday Party: The second grade party is scheduled for Thursday, December 17 @ 9:30 – 11:00am. Thank you in advance for volunteering! Remember, please complete the volunteer training!
Writing:
Students will be writing one final informational book. They need to make it the best book. The second graders will add pictures, facts, diagrams, table of contents, glossaries, indexes, captions, and headings. They will “show off” their writings in a celebration next Friday.
Reading:
The second graders will learn about the different holidays in the world. There will be fun activities for all to share.
Health:
Students will be learning about safety of medicines and prescription drugs. They will be reviewing labels of over the counter medications, learning about the amount of dosage required, and verifying that an adult is administering the medications accurately to children. Some important tips for safety are as follows:
Top Tips
- Put medicines up and away and out of sight. Make sure that all medicines, including vitamins and adult medicines, are stored out of reach and out of sight of children. (In 86% of emergency room visits for medicine poisoning, the child got into medicine belonging to an adult.)
- Consider places where kids get into medicine. Kids get into medication in all sorts of places, like in purses and nightstands. (In 67% of cases, the medicine was within reach of a child, such as in a purse, left on a counter or dresser or found on the ground.)
- Consider products you might not think about as medicines. Most parents know to store medicine up and away - or at least the products they consider to be medicine. But they don't always think about products such as diaper rash remedies or eye drops, which may not seem like medicine but can cause harm.
- Use the dosing device that comes with the medicine. Proper dosing is important, particularly for young children. Use the dosing device that comes with the medicine. Kitchen spoons aren't all the same, and a teaspoon and tablespoon used for cooking won't measure the same amount as the dosing device.
- Put the toll-free number for the Poison Control Center (1-800-222-1222) into your home and cell phone. You should also post it near your phone or on your refrigerator for the babysitter. Hopefully you'll never need it, but it's nice to have just in case.
